risky business (the boys built-in bunks, blue and Dimore Studio)

(my boys built in bunks progress)

Do you ever have a little battle going on in your head when decorating?  I do!  Here is the deal... I like a little visual tension and I like to take a little risk but when it is my very own money I get nervous and the conversation in my brains starts to say that it would be best to play it safe and go with the more neutral choice.  Then I can not fully rest because that may not be what I really want to do.  For example in out new home we decided it would be best to keep the boys together in one room and so it made sense to have some built in beds to make the space more efficient.  The wheels were set in motion and when it came down to picking a paint color I would close my eyes and see the color..blue.  Then the feedback came rolling in saying the beds needed to be more neutral, as in a mushroom, taupe or tan.  One of these said people delivering the feedback is the guy fronting half the funds so you see there is pressure and then questionings pertaining to my ability to pull off the vision.  Then my sister reminded me of Mr. S. R. Gambrel because he uses the color blue in his designs like it is never going out of style and his stuff is SO good it hurts.  Then that same day I came across a space in Architectural Digest France and it made me feel so inspired and gave me that little boost that I needed to at least go out and get 15 samples of paints leaning toward the blue side. The below space as designed by Emiliano Salci and Britt Moran who make up Dimore Studio.  The space really fuels my vision to go ahead a take a little more risk (I love it when that happens).  I completely understand that this space is not realistic for most people and their everyday place to dwell in but to me it is art, very inspiring and so chic.   So many different elements that could be translated into a space that works for me and my home.  What do you all think?  Are you a risk taker?

I think I'm sort of a risk taker- about to take a big one in the nursery department so I'm all for it:) LOVE the built in bunk beds and I think they'd be glorious in blue!

I'm dying! Those beds look fabulous! I love that you are doing so many things I want to do in my next home, but your risk taking goes beyond mine, so I find your design choices very inspiring. Blue is a favorite color of mine and so very boy. I look forward to seeing what shade you choose and how you decorate around it. Even though blue is big right now, it's very classic and they say inspires loyalty and trustworthiness so how can you go wrong? :)

Oooh, I'm terribly envious of all that wall space. We're doing built-in bunk beds for our boys too, but we don't have room to do side-by-side like that, so we have to go three up!

And now you have me thinking of what color I'm going to paint them. Their walls are a midnight blue now...hmmm...

Ohhhh I think they would look fabulous in a blue! I feel you on the risk taking. I am constantly reigning myself in on the thought that I won't be able to spend the money the same item a year or two down the road. So much pressure to make a good choice! I can't wait to see how you decorate your new house!

Good work! Thanks for post.

I completely relate. I think it is much harder to make design decisions about my own house. I feel way more confident helping clients and friends. That said, I vote blue. Can't wait to see how they turn out!

hi! I am new here at Full House. So nice to meet you in blogland.
I love this post. Fab design comes from the Risk takers.... but it is one thing to do it with a clients' time and money; Another to do it with your own. I always need a cheerleader saying, Go Go GO!!
So... I say GO! It's only paint! Go for it!!!

I knew it! I knew you had more than one brain from whence all your brilliance streams.

Bunk beds, yes! Can they really be anything else but blue? Go for it.

Hi! I haven't posted in forever! These bunks are amazing! I think a really intense navy would be awesome or a neutral and then blue striped comforters! Adorable!

How fun! The beds look so great. Go blue and make the bed spreads neutral for Way-Ways sake. :)

Wow! I love the bunks. We plan to do something similar with our kids' room (maybe when they are a little older...I could see my almost 2 year old jumping off the top and getting hurt. teehee).

Can't wait for more details!

i think you have amazing taste....and i would totally trust anything you decided. you should remind that guy fronting half of the funds how AWESOME you are.

Oh my gosh, I'm so right there with you! I had all these big plans for risky, colorful rooms with this new house. When it was time to pull the paint trigger I choked and went all neutral. Now I'm slowly adding color in little by little. When it's your own penny and space it's hard to take risks. Trust me. If you end up going neutral you'll get bored with it and end up painting it blue down the road anyway. So save yourself some time and take a risk. I can say that to you because you have impeccable taste.
