{a home on the upper west side}
This space decorated and designed by Thom Filicia is very well put together. It is a balance between masculine and feminine. It also feels very safe and likable..it's rather pretty...not a ton of risks but just enough..ya know. Plus it feels fresh and classic at the same time.
When I was at my orthodontic appointment yesterday I overheard some younger women talk about their style when it came to decorating. One of the girls said, "I think my style is modern", then followed by the question, "would you say modern is the zig zag or chevron print?" That was actually the second time I had heard somebody define their style by using the word chevron. Now I myself like chevron but have recently found myself tiring of it which then led me to think about the role blogs and Pinterest play in influencing the duration of liking certain things. In effort to fight the blogging..pinterest..sick of seeing things over and over I am choosing to say that today I really like the zig zag hardwood floor pattern in the above hallway/corridor space.....but I still probably am not going to choose most zig zag fabrics..especially if they are yellow, pink or aqua.
Do you feel as a reader or author of blogs that you tire of things quickly?
Yes! Last summer I was so excited about the Missoni line at Target but by the time it finally arrived in October I was over it. I'd seen it too many times already online and it wasn't even out yet. IKAT fabric is another one when I wanted to find it locally I couldn't and now it's everywhere and I can't stand it.
ReplyDeleteThe minute other people start to like something I'm over it. It breaks my heart a little when a thing that I've been fond of becomes trendy because I know that it is then dead to me.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely. It's hard not to when you see something so much more than the average person might. I still love it though- so it's worth it. I do really love that star wallpaper in the kitchen- gorgeous and fun!
ReplyDeleteMost definately. I am completely sick of chevron and even ikat too. Yet, I have just noticed it start to be popular here (and I guarantee Australian stores are another six months behind the US anyway).
ReplyDeleteMy problem with seeing so much design, is that I feel like everything has been done. I'll come across something, have an amazing idea and then feel a bit disappointed because I find it on Pinterest! Before blogging, I would have been happy with myself for thinking of something so original :) xx

All the time! But I also know I really love something even if I see it all over the blogosphere (chevron, herringbone, any type of panelling or breadboard still fall in that category)
ReplyDeleteThom Filicia is such a talent! I love his interiors.
ReplyDeleteI'm sick of Moroccan already. I do love seeing a beautiful suzani at the edge of a bed, but a whole room of lanterns, pillows, beni ourain rugs--I'm over it.
My dad and I were talking about this several months ago. He's really into colonial architecture and furniture, and you used to be able to tell if a chair was manufactured in Providence, New York, or Philadelphia just by the design details. In the 18th century, those cities were so far apart (how many days on horseback???) that the products and art evolved completely separately from each other.
ReplyDeleteNow, thanks to the magic of the internet, gray-and-white-and-yellow chevron circles the globe in a matter of days, and we're all sick to death of it before the manufacturers can even whip up a batch!
And yes, it gives us yet one more way to stratify ourselves with greater ease, into people who are bored with chevron and people who are still salivating over it. Among many other things.
I totally do it, and yes I'm bored with chevron. :) But I also think it kind of sucks. No point in trying to make the world into something it isn't, though, you know? Information moves fast now, - it is what it is.
I always enjoy your blog for something that I know I haven't seen on 50 other Mormon mom blogs that week, though. I can count on you!
It's funny because I get a little nervous when I have something that has become trendy. For example I have two terrariums in my kitchen and when my sister in law came over the other day (she lives in another state so we don't see each other much) I kinda thought to myself "OMG, is she going to think 'terrariums were so yesterday!'" There is still a large part of the population that isn't into blogging and Pinterest (at least I hope)!
ReplyDeleteIt has been a bit overdone! I'd rather talk about this amazing home you shared! WOW! I love it!
ReplyDeleteOMG OMG OMG I love it the house but I agree I do get over things very quickly when they become super popular. like the Keep Calm and Carry On poster. I got one years ago when I had to order it from the UK and now it's in Target and I am just over it.
ReplyDeleteFunny now how it is the "cool" thing to be over something. Whatever-do what makes you happy.
ReplyDeleteI like what I like and I don't what I don't. I still like chevron - or just about anything with stripes - but I hate ikat and hated it the first moment I laid eyes on it. *shrug*
ReplyDeleteIt sucks that its not very original to have some of those things anymore (is anything relaly original anymore?), but on the other hand, I don't stop listening to a music artist I love just because they get a radio hit and suddenly everyone knows who they are.

ReplyDeleteYes. It's interesting how quickly things will come in and out of style because of our overabundance in web play.
ReplyDeleteYes, chevron is everywhere right now. It will die down, but it's not going to go away. It's a classic - like stripes, houndstooth, plaid etc. It's trendy use will fade. It's use in a classic classy way will always look good. I know the "fun" colored zigzag throw pillow form you are talking about "it's so in right now!". When it comes to chevron think 1920's (like the floors you like). There is a reason that stuff survived.
ReplyDeletethat's my FAVOURITE wallpaper, so pretty!!
ReplyDeleteI think as readers/bloggers we suffer from pretty overload that sometimes can tire us of seeing the same thing all over! There are still some of the trends I like though so I guess some are here to stay
Don't fall for trends. Use what you would choose. It's hard enough to keep your wardrobe up-to-date! You'd need to be independently wealthy to keep falling for home decorating trends.

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion there's too much pattern and prints but still it's nice esp the one with lots of butterflies.
ReplyDeleteIt's good for me because by the time I get around to buying something, it's already over. Saved a dollar or two.
