I have been eating quinoa for quite a while now. One day my friend called me up wanting some guidance on how to prepare it and I suggested that she start out having it for breakfast because she could sweeten it with honey or agave nectar. She claimed that it didn't work out so well for her but it just may for anybody else out there who wishes to give it a shot. We have had so much success having quinoa for breakfast in our home. It kind of breaks up the steel cut oats regimen. We have also tried using amaranth, buckwheat, millet, spelt, and brown rice cereal to name a few...but quinoa is always at the top of the list for a couple of my boys. I always take comfort that even if we don't do so well at dinner we can make up for it in the morning.
My favorite breakfast quinoa regimen:
Rinse and cook the desired amount (cooks really fast..12 minutes or what seems equal to white rice). The water to quinoa ratio is 2:1. After it is nice and fluffy then add butter, cinnamon, nuts, honey/agave and milk (soy, almond, cow etc) and enjoy.
I haven't tried it yet but I have heard that if you actually cook the quinoa in milk rather than water that it turns out even better.
I came across the above recipe over here and thought it look like such a great new quinoa recipe to add to the mix for dinner or lunch.
Wow! That looks divine. I have yet to try making quinoa, despite having had a bag for a few months. Might give it a try this weekend. Thanks for the reminder. Happy Easter lovely lady, to you and yours! xo
ReplyDeleteps- Framing always seems cheapest for me at Michaels. They always have 40-60% off sales here... and do a lovely job.
pps... are you vegetarian btw?? :D
ReplyDeleteNo I am not a vegetarian but I go through phases where meat does not sound the best.
ReplyDeleteThis is something definitely worth trying, and would make a lovely change from our usual oats for breakfast in winter.
ReplyDeleteThe image you have chosen looks so mouth watering I could gobble it all up right now, off my computer screen! Do you have a recipe for that too?
We eat quinoa a lot as a type of "salad" mixed with avocados, red peppers, cucs, parsley and olive oil and balsamic. Kinda like a taboule... But I have never thought to try it for breakfast because I'm so programmed to oatmeal. I have a gluten free kid so this would be awesome if I could get him hooked, and much cheaper than the G.F. oats too!
ReplyDeleteI love all your kitchen magic a secrets, my kids are still so impressed withthe popcorn!
Huh, we love quinoa but I've never thought to try it for breakfast! It's just the kind of taste I like for brekkie though so maybe we'll give it a shot tomorrow on our "day off" (HA!)
ReplyDeletei am officially trying this tomorrow - i love quinoa, and never ever thought to try it for breakfast. mmm! thank you so much! x
ReplyDeleteditto to Michael's framing - always a sale!
ReplyDeleteI love quinoa - I'll have to try it for breakfast now. My kids love it when I put wheat berries in the crock pot overnight and in the morning they have it with milk, cinnamon and a little brown sugar. If you are interested it is 1 cup wheat to 3 cups water, and it needs to cook on low for 8 hours.
ReplyDeletethat looks right up my alley. must try asap.
ReplyDeletei love steal oat and def need to try these! thanks
ReplyDeleteFrom experience, I also know that rinsing the quinoa very very well (in a wire-mesh strainer) before cooking will remove a lot of the bitter taste that can sometimes accompany the grain. This would be an especially great tip for a breakfast version of this amazing food!
ReplyDeleteI love quinoa!! For breakfast...for lunch..dinner...dessert even.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I like it in stews and soups as well!
ReplyDeleteHaven't had quinoa in ages and I really need to drop my Oreos with milk breakfast habit.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have to try it cooked in milk. Sounds yummy!
ReplyDeleteLOVE quinoa for breakfast - I'll have to try your variation, as well as that divine-looking recipe!
