Concrete floors????

With the mishap of our tile floor I have considered just doing a stained concrete floor with a gloss put on top. They seem like such a easy floor to take care of with no grout. Without big rugs though they probably would make a room seem cold.

Has anybody seen concrete floors done in a home & what did you think?  Too cold?

  1. i've seen them in two homes. one seemed sterile and moody, the other was quite nice. i think it all depends on the rest of your decor.

  2. Kristina is doing concrete floors in her playroom, you should stop by and check it out. But I have a friend who changed her kitchen floors to concrete and it looked great. Not cold at all. She did it with dark brown colors. Really cute.

  3. Huffakers have it as temporary in their kitchen and it looks AMAZING!!! And living in AZ, I think the cool of the concrete would be a great bonus in the summer.

  4. I've been watching HGTV, DIY Network, etc.. like crazy lately because we are getting ready to move into a small dated house. ANYWAY, The other night I saw an episode (it might have been Beyond The Box) and they showed a polish concrete floor that was gorgeous! I liked it so much I wrote down what they used. They used Concrete Terazzo, which they said is made from ground marble dust.

  5. You can check out my blog I have been working on my basement floor for a few weeks. I love the white painted concrete floors unfortunately I think it will clash with the countertop in the laundry room. I did an acrylic stain and hated it and now I am on to an acid stain and I am hoping for a marble look. Please leave a comment if you stop by.

  8. I almost left you a comment yesterday saying...."go with concrete floors", but then I looked at your pics and decided you were on pier & beam and that wouldn't work.

We have concrete floors THROUGHOUT our downstairs. It's the best floor I've ever had, and we've had a lot of them, since hubby is a builder and we live in a house until it sells and then start all over again w/another.

It's warm, inviting, country...absolutely the best for maintenance. You will love it. Our house theme is red, white & blue, so our floor is red...barn red.

GO FOR IT! You'll love it.

  12. We had white carpet ,hubby would flip every time there was a dot on them. Superbowl 2 years ago we ripped out the white carpet. 45.00 bux later ( yep that was it) we stained them darkest brown by Behr. Poly-ed the top and LOVE them. 3 kids ,2 big dogs nothing messes them up. Do it ,YOU WILL LOVE it. By the way we used the solid stain as our floors had a few "stains" on them and needed more coverage.

  14. Go for it, I've always dreamed of concrete floors, but where i live they don't know how to do them at all....terrazzo floors are poured in sections that can be divided gorgeous thin strips of stainless steel, i imagine you could incorporate these strips into a concrete floor as well to break it up just a bit with some gorgeous geometry.

  15. My parents have concrete floors and it is really cold during the winter. Plus, you have to do the gloss once every six months or so, or it starts to wear through and you get not-so-pretty spots. But, when it's taken care of, it's GORGEOUS!!

  16. I love concrete floors, and when I first read your post yesterday that's the first thing I thought of to suggest. We looked into doing them in the basement of our old house, actually pulling up the carpet and staining the concrete beneath, but that floor had a lot of blemishes and carpet tack strip holes and needed a lot of patching. But I love the look and kind of wish we had made it happen anyway.

  17. We have concrete floors, and you can feel free to come on by and take a look. I can show you a couple of problems you may not have forseen. Most people think it is really big tile because we have what looks like grout lines carved into the concrete. I would not recommend that. And of course we have large rugs in all of the living areas except the kitchen. It is a must with concrete, I think. And it's not cheap. But it is a really good look if done right.

  18. Oh- and the coolness is not a problem, ever. Because we live in AZ. But I find I have to wear shoes in the house when I do housework for any length of time. Or when I am pregnant. Because it is hard on my feet. But we don't have carpet anywhere in our home.( I have issues with carpet;)

  19. Try stamped concrete. It makes a different look to the concrete. They can put a sealant down that you do not have to deal with the bumps. It has a great look. If you are worried about it being cold in the winter (not that AZ gets to cold in the winter) you can put radiant heat in the floors. concrete is great for that as well. So many choices when it comes to concrete. It is a good choice.

  20. An other choice that has to do with concrete floors, they do stenciling on the floors in the concrete. If you what to see what it looks like Go to this site:http://www.concretenetwork.com/concrete/stenciling_concrete/

If for just the concrete look try this site:

This is another choice, it is little pebbles in the concrete-a very nice look and easy to care for. Look at this site:

  21. it looks like you already have your answer...but in San Francisco there were apartments that had the galvanized concrete floors and they were awesome. i don't know why you don't see it more. although i do have a friend with cement countertops and they were kinda pricey.

  22. i vote yes on concrete floors! i love them, but i don't know about the maintenance, but i can't imagine there is much. i've seen a concrete floor(not in person, in a magazine) a teal color with a gloss over the top and fell in love! if you decide to do it, make sure you share pictures and let us know if you like or dislike.

  23. I have concrete floors in my house and LOVE them! We stained them ourselves with a rust color, but not evenly so some of the original concrete color shows through. We sealed with a satin finish instead of the gloss. Much lower maintenance. We've had them for five years with a dog and a toddler. No damage at all. We have them in our bedroom/master bath and don't find them cold (aesthetically at least). We have a few sisal rugs down. Go for it!

  28. The only maintenance required of concrete floors is weekly mopping with soapy water.
